In a move to bring its operations closer to the talent pool and offer more job opportunities to local professionals, Infosys is set to open a new campus in Kolkata in the next 18 months. It will span across a total of 50 acres of land, and is estimated to be worth more than Rs 100 crore.

The news is certain to be a welcome one in West Bengal, with the state government having already made preparations for the tech giant. Furthermore, an investment of this caliber could prove to be a major boost for the local IT sector.

Infosys has made it clear that it looks forward to welcoming people to its office soon and is keen to hire locals for the same. Through the initiative, it aims to reduce the need for its employees to travel to other cities, as well as provide employment closer to home.

Notably, a spokesperson from the company has already intimated that they are in a “silent period” ahead of a board meeting expected to take place on April 12 and 13. During this time, further information is expected to emerge regarding this historic development.

Founded in 1981, Infosys is one of the biggest names in the information technology sector with over 2.19 lakh employees worldwide. Led by CEO and Managing Director Salil Parekh, the Indian multinational corporation is based in Bengaluru and has offices across 48 countries. It provides access to a range of services, from software development and IT consulting to business process management and software re-engineering.

An alumnus of the reputed Indian Institute of Technology and Indian Institute of Management, Salil Parekh became the CEO of Infosys in January 2018. As a veteran leader in the technology industry, he has additionally served as the Executive director of product engineering services at the Capgemini Group, as well as played a key role in the establishment of CGI Group’s India operations.
