Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy’s scheduled visit to Sri Kodandarama Swamy temple at Vontimitta in Kadapa on the occasion of ‘Sita Rama Kalyanam’ has been cancelled. The Chief Minister was to present the ‘silk vastram’ on behalf of the State Government. However, the reason for cancelling the visit is unknown. Nevertheless, this development has not gone down well with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has flayed Mr. Reddy for deliberately missing the important annual event.

The temple at Vontimitta was taken over by the Tirumala Tirupati Devastanams (TTD) management, and ₹100 crore has been spent on its beautification, upkeep, development of infrastructure, and pilgrim amenities. The Kadapa district administration has also contributed in order to ensure a smooth conduct of the festival, which is expected to attract thousands of devotees.

Despite the requested visit being cancelled, devotees from East Godavari have made a generous contribution of 1 crore (180 kg) of rice grains, which will be used during the wedding of the deities. This extraordinary act took three months and was dehusked by hands. The grains were grown by farmers in four states.

Overall, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister’s cancellation of the visit has stirred up trouble for the BJP and the Chief Minister himself has come under scrunity. It remains to be seen how this situation will develop, but in the meantime, the people of Andhra Pradesh and the TTD are greatly appreciative for the contribution of devotees from East Godavari.
