Costly Summer Vacations to Popular Destinations

Summer vacations are going to be costly this season, with hotel costs raising by up to 15% in the most sought after tourist spots across India. Udaipur, Kerala, Jaipur, Goa, and Kashmir have all reported an inflation of prices compared to last summer, and an even more pronounced rise in prices when compared to the pre-Covid figures. Rates for four- and five-star establishments range from Rs 12,500 to Rs 26,000 per night or more.

The high expense has been attributed to the number of weddings occurring in the post-Covid, November to March season, incentivised corporate trips, and an increasing number of leisure travellers. According to Nikhil Thakurdas, CEO of Odyssey Tours and Travels, “The cost of operations, including salaries for the staff, has risen with the pandemic, creating a competition for staff as many were laid off during the two-year long Covid-19 period. Trained personnel moved away from the industry and opted for alternate careers.”

Thakurdas added that resulting demand has resulted in a higher than usual tariff per night. As an example, a hotel which might have charged Rs 15,000 a night prior to Covid has risen up to Rs 22,000 to 25,000 a night.

Leader of opposition Ajit Pawar has condemned the current row over PM Narendra Modi’s educational qualifications, claiming that in Indian politics, a degree has no relevance. According to him, Modi’s leadership has been the reason for the BJP’s victory in the Lok Sabha.

Pawar went further to claim that the huge expenditure of the current government on advertisements is a waste of public funds, and that the government should instead focus on solving the agrarian crisis and at the same time, fill up the tens of thousands of vacancies across departments. He credited his own government for advertising schemes, and not individuals, thereby spending much less for the same.

When it comes to the Savarkar gaurav yatras of the BJP-Shiv Sena, Pawar claims it to be mere political drama, while imploring DyCM Devendra Fadnavis to ensure Savarkar gets the Bharat Ratna award.
