WWE-UFC Headlock: Financial Theatrics at Play. The iconic names of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) and Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) have now joined forces in an unprecedented merger. Talent agency Endeavor – owners of theUFC – will combine with Vince McMahon’s WWE in a colossal deal valued at $21 billion. Wall Street watchers are scratching their head as financial theatrics take center stage, creating a storyline full of anticipation, suspense, and spectacle.
The newly unveiled agreement requires WWE at a value of $9.3 billion and UFC at $12.1 billion including their debt obligations. Despite this, Wall Street seemed to be underwhelmed with the news as WWE shares slumped 5% making the combined equity valuation of the company total to $15 billion – some $3 billion short of what the companies had promised.
Endeavor and their boss Ari Emanuel feel the new merge will reap great rewards and promise shareholders exciting returns. In the presentation to the investors, they promised $70 million of operational synergies and further gains from renegotiating media rights packages. In a page taken from the dramatic world of wrestling, McMahon and Emanuel offer a more unconventional thriller to appease their shareholders.
The WWE is of course continuously associated with Vince McMahon and his family, who will have a much a larger portion of benefits. Not only does WWE get to own a significant majority of the merged company, but this time it’s even more of a McMahon family business show. Not only is Vince McMahon the chairman of the new company, but Endeavor’s chief executive – none other than Ari Emanuel – will now be in the CEO seat of two publicly traded companies aided by the “McMahon Marvel.”
Though it’s not exactly clear how both wrestling and mixed martial arts will take advantage of the newly created partnership, the combined company will be primed to make a mark in the competitive entertainment industry. Whether the financial theatrics are able to make a different in the market, it will be interesting to see what Vince McMahon and Ari Emanuel are able to accomplish.
