On Sunday, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Inder Iqbal Singh Atwal joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the presence of Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and other senior leaders of the party. Atwal is the son of Charanjit Singh Atwal, a politician who served as Deputy Speaker of the 14th Lok Sabha from 2004 to 2009, and Speaker of the Punjab Assembly. In addition to Inder Atwal, his younger brother Jasjeet Singh and other political leaders from Punjab also joined the party at BJP’s headquarters.
Atwal expressed his admiration for the implementation of Babasaheb Ambedkar’s ideas under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Government and said that he was joining the BJP to be a part of these efforts. He also hailed Mr. Modi’s achievement of reopening the Kartarpur corridor for Sikhs, declaring it a historic milestone. Atwal emphasised the need for creating a new era of development in Punjab that incorporates all sections of the society, including Dalits. Both he and his brother will work hard to strengthen the BJP in the State under the leadership of party cadres.
Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri welcomed Atwal and several other party members who had joined the BJP and called it a result of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “new governance model”. MR. Puri recalled Charanjit Singh Atwal’s contribution to the country’s politics and said that the entry of Inder and his brother into the BJP would strengthen the party. Similarly, BJP’s Punjab incharge Vijay Rupani said that Atwal and his family have significant influence in the state and their joining will prove to be advantageous to the party in the future. Rupani said that the people of Punjab have become fed up and frustrated with the situation and they are looking up to the BJP to make the state progress under Prime Minister Modi’s vision. The other leaders present during the join ceremony were National General Secretary Tarun Chugh, Chief Spokeperson and Rajya Sabha MP Anil Baluni, Punjab State Unit President Ashwani Sharma and Union Minister Som Prakash.
