BJP leader Locket Chatterjee has trained her guns at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of doing ‘appeasement politics’ in the wake of several violent incidents that took place in the state during the Navratri festival earlier this year. Speaking in Delhi on April 03, Chatterjee alleged that Banerjee was focused on winning Muslim votes ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections rather than protecting the Hindu festivals celebrated in the state.
Referring to the violence that took place in Howrah district on Ram Navami, Chatterjee pointed out that the Chief Minister had shifted media attention away from the events that day. She also accused the West Bengal government of squandering a situation similar to the one seen in Jammu & Kashmir and Pakistan. According to Chatterjee, the government’s alleged promotion of the Muslim festival of Ramzan Roja over Hindu festivals such as Navaratri and Ramnavmi was indicative of their ineffectiveness in protecting the Hindu community living in Bengal. Chatterjee went on to demand Banerjee’s resignation from her post.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been highly vocal of their stance against the rising incident of religious violence in the state. The party has publicly accused the West Bengal government of being indifferent to the Hindu community and promoting appeasement politics. The on-going talks of religious tensions in the state could have a negative impact on the electoral prospects not just of BJP in the Lok Sabha polls, but the ruling party in West Bengal as well.
Locket Chatterjee is the BJP State General Secretary. She is a long-standing member of the BJP and prior to her current role, was a Member of Parliament and the former State General Secretary. Chatterjee has also produced and acted in several Bengali films. She is currently a strong advocate of the party’s stance against the state government’s actions and will continue to fight for justice and protection of the Hindu community in West Bengal.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is a right-wing political party in India. It seeks to capture India’s democracy and promote Mahatma Gandhi’s ideologies of nationalism, social justice and economic self-reliance. In recent years, the party has expanded its presence throughout India and is currently the dominant ruling party of India. The party has emerged as a strong opposition to the current ruling parties in states such as West Bengal, making its presence felt with the increasing number of violent incidents against the Hindu community in the state. BJP is also the main challenger for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. With its growing clout, BJP is likely to affect the electoral prospects of most of the state governments in India.
