The Harry Kane witch hunt has been a source of media controversy in recent years. England captain, Kane is often praised for his abilities and accomplishments on the field, however, there are frequent accusations that he gets an ‘easy ride’ from the media due to his status. This is simply not true as Kane does often face criticism for his performances. An incident which occurred on Monday at an away match between Tottenham Hotspur and Everton, drove this point home.

The incident started when Kane committed a foul on Demarai Gray and was then tackled by Abdoulaye Doucoure. The two men then got into an argument and Douceoure threw out a left hand, which lightly touched Kane’s face. Kane’s reaction was immediately scrutinized and many were quick to point the finger at him. This begs the question, would the same reaction be given to a less prominent player in such a circumstance? It is highly unlikely.

The truth is, Kane is just playing the same sport as everyone else. In today’s Premier League, if a player makes contact with an opponent’s face, it is likely that the referee will show a red card. This means that there is not much room for leniency, regardless of the circumstance. This was the case on Monday- Sean Dyche, the Everton manager, and Michael Keane, the Everton defender, both agreed that it was an obvious red card.

Gone are the days when common sense was applied and referees could diffuse a situation with a simple yellow card. Football has become more theatrics-driven and this is an issue far greater than the England captain. If Harry Kane were any other player, he would have still reacted how he did and the result would have been the same.
