Reliance Retail Ventures (RRVL) has roped in industry veteran RS Sodhi as the head of their grocery business, as per a report by The Times of India. The addition of Sodhi comes in at a time when the e-commerce arm of Reliance Industries is aiming to build their presence in the grocery segment.
Sodhi was the Managing Director of Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), popularly known as Amul. With more than four decades of experience, the 57-year-old will bring in the required experience to help Isha Ambani in building the business in the grocery space. The expertise that Sodhi has in the dairy industry may be used to leverage products in competition with Amul and Mother Dairy.
RRVL’s Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) arm – Reliance Consumer Products – has been expanding its presence continuously with new launches such as the Campa beverage brand, personal care products, and home care products. The increasing presence of the e-commerce arm in the market has made the addition of Sodhi even more crucial.
Reliance Industries is an Indian conglomerate owned by the Amabnni family, spearheaded by Mukesh Ambani. It is India’s largest fortune 500 company, and has done a lot of work in influencing the Indian economy with its digital initiatives such as the Jio mobile network. The company’s e-commerce initiatives have failed to gain much traction due to established rivalry with market leaders like Amazon and Flipkart. Hence, the addition of RS Sodhi will enable them to take to the next level in the grocery space.
Sodhi’s experience from GCMMF will enable him to bring in the necessary changes in Reliance Retail Ventures and leverage the expertise in the dairy products industry. With the addition of Sodhi, Reliance Industries will not only strengthen their presence in the FMCG space, but also build a strong presence in the consumer brands sector.
