Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju has expressed strong disapproval after a Congress official from Dindigul, Manikandan made a threatening remark about a judge who convicted party leader Rahul Gandhi in a defamation case. Rijiju sternly responded saying that the ruling party will not remain quiet if the opposition tries to disrupt the nation’s Constitution.

Rijiju said that the Congress party is in deep frustration which has caused them to lash out against the judiciary and that the government cannot stay idle and allow that to continue. A Surat court judge sentenced Gandhi to two years in prison in 2019 after he was found guilty of defaming PM Modi’s surname. This conviction meant Gandhi had to step down from his position in the Lok Sabha.

Home Minister Amit shah said that those related to dynastic politics are the ones in danger, not democracy and Rijiju mentioned the same, during an interview in Jammu. Congress’ attack on the judiciary, especially during the emergency in 1975, cannot be forgotten and it is because of this frustration that such uncalled for threats have been issued. Rajeev Chandrasekhar, an Electronic, also condemned the Congress’s stance on the matter.

Rahul Gandhi is currently a senior politician in India and a fourth-generation leader of the Indian National Congress party. He served as the President of the INC from 16 December 2017 to 3 July 2019 and has been a Member of Parliament for Amethi for three straight terms, from 2004 to 2019. His father and former Prime Minister of India Rajiv Gandhi and his grandmother, Indira Gandhi have been former Prime Ministers of India from 1980–1984 and 1966-1977 respectively.

Kiren Rijiju is an Indian Politician who has been the Minister of State for Home Affairs since 31 May 2019 in the Second Modi Ministry. He is a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader who was previously a member of the Indian Parliament from Arunachal West Constituency.
